Recycling: Valuable in many ways

At the Clas Ohlson Distribution Centre, goods from about 3 700 containers are unloaded every year.

The goods are wrapped in various kinds of packaging materials. In just one year this can amount to 1 104 tonnes of corrugated fibreboard and 46.1 tonnes of plastic.

Here are great opportunities for value creation, both for the environment and for the company.

Energy recovery

Corrugated fibreboard and plastic are materials that can be both used for energy recovery and material recycling. In the case of energy recovery, the material is burned and energy and heat are produced. However, recycling firms charge per kilogram for burning waste, and the energy recovery process generates carbon-dioxide. Moreover, nature then has to contribute with new resources later when new plastic and cardboard need to be made from new raw materials because the old raw materials have been burned.

Material recycling

It is therefore more beneficial both environmentally and financially to recycle the materials. Recycling firms pay to receive plastic, corrugated fibreboard and other materials for material recycling. At Insjön alone, where the Clas Ohlson Head Office and Distribution Centre are located, the decision to recycle materials has reduced our carbon-dioxide emissions by 235 tonnes.

Clas Ohlson, logistics and packaging

The best solution for the environment is of course to optimise our logistics and to use as little packaging material as possible. Clas Ohlson currently has several initiatives in progress to optimise logistics and the use of packaging materials without compromising the safety of shipped goods and quality.

More about Clas Ohlson's initiatives regarding logistics and packaging materials later in the summer and in autumn!
