Sustainable development
A second group of trainees joins Clas Ohlson. Arvid Dahlström, Petter Linde and Samuel Wilhelmsson will soon begin to find their feet as trainees on the graduate scheme which began on 1 September. CO News caught up with the boys for a chat on day two of their induction at the head office in Insjön, and they all agreed that there’s a LOT to take in right from the start. “There is a lot of information and inspiration,” explains Samuel.
The programme began with a two-day induction at Insjön, followed immediately by the trainees being thrown in at the deep end at their respective stores; Arvid was assigned to Sickla, Petter to Drottninggatan, and Samuel to Örebro City. This year the trainee programme, which was launched last autumn, will see the new trainees concentrating for the first time solely on the store, rather than working on projects in parallel with in-store training. The change was introduced following feedback from last year’s trainees. Arvid thinks there are advantages to being in the second batch of trainees: “Jacob, Sofia and Gustaf who started last autumn have really been the guinea pigs for this scheme, and we can benefit from the feedback they gave to those running the programme. Last year’s group are serving as mentors this time around.”
How a traineeship works out is not carved in stone from the first day to the last, but is what you make of it. “We have a great deal of responsibility, as well as a say in what happens. This enables us to find a role we enjoy,” explains Petter. Samuel agrees, adding: “It is a fantastic opportunity to meet a lot of different people and learn a lot about various functions within the company. It is perfect for networking and discovering which jobs you are best at and where you can contribute the most.” Arvid likes the fact that Clas Ohlson’s programme is so open, enabling the trainees to enter into discussions and support one another without the fear of competition getting in the way. A lot of other companies take on a certain number of trainees, but only some of them make it through and get a job at the company. “It is a stressful process, which we avoid, as all three of us will see it through to the end.”
Arvid, Petter and Samuel are all on the same trainee programme but that doesn’t mean they will all be doing the same thing. Each has his own interests, which they will examine in greater detail later on in the programme. “I have studied sales and marketing for three years, so to be able to work in this sector is great,” says Petter. Arvid has worked for periods at the Distribution Centre (DC) and his dissertation dealt with methods for unloading containers, so logistics is a subject he finds incredibly interesting: “Logistics, whether it be materials or information flows, keeps the entire company moving forward, and I find the whole process unbelievably interesting.” Samuel has not yet decided which area he would like to work in, but thinks it would be cool and interesting to work with something like online sales.
The first element of the programme involves in-store training. To begin with, the trainees will receive a week’s in-store training at the new store on Bogstadveien in Oslo. This will give them the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about being a store employee from scratch. They will also be participating in a few store manager meetings. After 4-8 months at their various stores, they will transfer to Insjön, where they will continue to work on a variety of projects.
