Transferring the Clas Ohlson Culture and Values to the UK

Clas Ohlson entered the UK in 2009 and was faced with the challenge of transferring the company’s corporate culture and values to new UK staff that had little understanding and appreciation of the Clas Ohlson brand.

Clas Ohlson’s culture and values

Clas Ohlson’s corporate culture and values are characterised by founder Clas Ohlson’s strong entrepreneurship and personal concern for both customers and staff. The corporate culture has evolved in recent years to encompass ethics, mutual respect, cooperation and an open exchange of thoughts and ideas. This culture is an integral part of our sustainability and CSR work and concerns every individual employee within the entire organisation.

The importance of Clas Ohlson’s corporate culture

The Clas Ohlson corporate culture helps to create strong retail teams, committed and knowledgeable staff, and ensures that customers receive high quality customer service and traditional retail hospitality. Clas Ohlson’s corporate culture and values are key assets that provide the company with a competitive advantage. The exportation of Clas Ohlson’s corporate culture to new stores and markets is consequently of huge importance.

Summary

Clas Ohlson’s UK employee training programme involves training in Sweden, practical experience in an existing store and experienced Scandinavian staff to act as role models. The programme ensures that new UK employees understand and share the Clas Ohlson corporate culture and values, which helps to promote productivity and satisfaction among employees.

UK employee training programme

Tailor-made training programme

Clas Ohlson based the UK training programme on its proven Scandinavian training programme, and its extensive experience of training new employees and transferring its corporate culture and values to new stores. Every element of the Clas Ohlson training programme was reviewed and adapted to the English language and culture.

Training in Sweden

UK employees are sent to the Clas Ohlson head office in Insjön, Sweden, to participate in a comprehensive training programme that ensures new UK employees understand and connect to the Clas Ohlson corporate culture and values. The programme is also intended to provide new UK employees with practical training in an existing Clas Ohlson store, which demonstrates the company culture and values in practice. As of April 2010, around 100 UK staff had undergone the entire training programme, including a week in Insjön, and 200 have undergone a condensed version of the training on-site in the UK.

Experienced staff as role models

Large sections of the UK training programme is conducted by a special training team that consists of five experienced Clas Ohlson retail employees from stores in Scandinavia. The experienced employees act as role models and aim to demonstrate the Clas Ohlson culture throughout the training programme. Experienced employees are also involved in the recruitment process for new UK stores to help find applicants who will fit in with the Clas Ohlson culture. Other Scandinavian employees are contracted for a minimum of 6 months to work alongside the new UK members of staff and to act as company role models.

Shared culture and values

The Clas Ohlson culture is based on team spirit and participation, and seeks to motivate, inspire and include employees. Clas Ohlson believes that employees who share the corporate culture and who feel part of a wider team are more productive and satisfied. This is reflected in high quality customer service and a low rate of staff turnover within the company.

Learning from good practice

The UK training programme is a resource intensive method of introducing new members of staff to the Clas Ohlson culture and values. However, the programme is expected to yield long-term benefits, such as productive and satisfied employees, and high quality customer service.
