Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson repairs items from the store’s product range, which promotes recycling, reduces waste and bucks the trend of throwaway consumerism.
Western societies are consuming increasing quantities of products with short lifespans, which are disposed of and replaced as soon as they no longer function properly, despite the ease with which they can often be repaired.
Clas Ohlson offers a product repair service to customers, which allows products to be repaired and reused. The service avoids the creation of waste, environmental pollution and the manufacture of new products. The repair service is also affordable and promotes good customer service.
The service is available at all Clas Ohlson stores and almost covers the entire Clas Ohlson product range. The most common products repaired include electrical household appliances, audio equipment, computer accessories and garden products. Clas Ohlson has around 9,000 spare parts in stock to allow products to be repaired in house, however some suppliers do not allow Clas Ohlson to repair products that are subject to warrantee conditions.
The repair service extends the useful lifespan of products and allows them to be reused, rather than disposing of them as waste. Electronic waste is often exported from Europe to poorer countries for processing and disposal, which can cause serious health risks and environmental pollution, involving cadmium, mercury and beryllium. The service also avoids the need to source new resources and manufacture replacement products.
Clas Ohlson’s repair service is affordable compared with services offered by competitors. The service is seen as goodwill and customers are often only charged for the replacement parts and not for the labour.
Clas Ohlson’s repair service is a unique service that enhances customer satisfaction. Many competitors do not offer such a service and depend on their suppliers to carry out repairs.
The repair service reduces the environmental impacts of Clas Ohlson’s products and leads to greater customer satisfaction.
