Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson is working to reduce the emissions associated with the transport of goods and people within Sweden, which causes air pollution and contributes toward global warming.
Transport emissions are gases released into the air following the combustion of fossil fuels to transport goods or people. Such gases contribute to global warming and cause air pollution that can damage human health or biological systems.
Clas Ohlson is reducing transport emissions in Sweden by increasing the proportion of rail transport, raising demands for more efficient vehicles, improving logistical planning and using video conferencing technology.
Clas Ohlson primarily uses electric trains driven by hydroelectric power to transport goods within Sweden. The electric trains use environmentally certified electricity and therefore have very low transport emissions. Rail transport in Sweden reduces CO2 emissions by over 99 % and energy demand by around 70 % compared with truck transport.Clas Ohlson also uses road transport in Sweden, and the majority of goods transferred from the distribution centre to Clas Ohlson’s Swedish stores are transported by truck. However, the long-term objective is to switch a large proportion of this road transport to rail in order to further reduce emissions. Goods transport will be switched to rail in the near future when the Insjön rail terminal and the regional rail network in Dalarna have sufficient capacity.
Clas Ohlson decided in 2007 that all haulage contractors must use truck motors that meet or exceed the EURO 3 emission standard. Random controls are conducted at the distribution centre in Insjön and at Clas Ohlson stores to check vehicle registration numbers and engine type on the Swedish traffic authority’s database. EURO 3 engines produce around two thirds less nitrous oxide (NOx) compared to EURO 0 engines and a third less uncombusted hydrocarbons, which can create ground-level ozone. More efficient EURO 3 engines also generate a third less carbon monoxide (CO) and a quarter of the particulate matter (PM), which can both cause lung and heart related illnesses.
Clas Ohlson optimises truck deliveries from the distribution centre to the eight regional logistics centres in Sweden in collaboration with Posten Logistik. The initiative ensures that trucks are always full before departing, which reduces the total number of truck journeys and vehicle emissions. Improved logistical planning annually saves around 70 tons of CO2 by reducing diesel consumption.
All Clas Ohlson stores and offices are equipped with video conferencing technology, which reduces the need to travel for meetings within Sweden and abroad. Clas Ohlson was named the video conferencing equipment user of the year by Tandberg teleconferencing in 2008.
Measures to reduce transport emissions in Sweden also make good business sense by reducing overall financial costs. For example, the optimisation of truck deliveries and the use of video teleconferencing equipment make financial savings by reducing the number of journeys required to transport goods and people.
