Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson has implemented systems to phase out the use of potentially harmful chemical substances from its products, and has established stricter standards than EU legislation.
Clas Ohlson has set ambitious chemical substance standards, which often far exceed REACH regulations and EU legislation on chemicals and skin contact, by supporting its suppliers, and developing a classification model and chemical substance declaration systems.
Clas Ohlson complies with all current REACH regulations and has set higher standards for chemicals on the REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). The list includes substances that are not currently subject to restrictions, but that are “candidates” to be banned from use in the future. However, Clas Ohlson has already limited the use of all SVHC candidate substances to less than 0.1 percent of the total weight of its products. We have also chosen to inform customers of our few products that contain traces of SVHC candidate substances on the product’s packaging and/or on the Clas Ohlson website. Legislation only requires us to inform professional users of potentially harmful chemicals contained in our products, but we believe that ordinary customers should also be entitled to this information.
Since 2007, we have phased out the use of phthalate plasticizers and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) from our products that can come into contact with skin. Phthalate plasticizers and PAHs can be toxic and carcinogenic, but there is currently only limited legislation for these substances, such as regulations regarding the use of phthalates in toys and children’s products. We have exceeded EU legislation by phasing out these chemicals from our entire product range.
We provide our suppliers with chemical substance information and keep them updated on the rapidly changing EU legislation via supplier-focused website information. The web information is regularly updated and provides news about which chemicals may be phased out in the future so that suppliers can consider potential replacements far in advance.
The Clas Ohlson product range includes a wide variety of products, sourced from a diverse group of suppliers. We have developed a product classification model, which steers the demands for chemical substance declaration documents that we impose on our suppliers, depending on the supplier and the type of risk associated with the product.
