Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson has implemented a project to improve transport pallet efficiency, which has reduced greenhouse gas emissions and transport costs.
Following a working environment and risk assessment, Clas Ohlson increased the maximum filling height of its transport pallets, used to transport goods from Clas Ohlson’s Distribution Centre (DC) in Insjön to its stores, from 1.75 m to 1.95 m. The new maximum height was introduced from early July 2011 and has resulted in pallets being able to contain more goods, which has reduced greenhouse gas emissions and transport costs.
The new maximum pallet height has increased the amount of goods that can be loaded onto each pallet by between 10 and 20 percent. During the second half of 2011, the project reduced the number of pallets by 16 000 which corresponds to 500 less truck journeys.
By requiring less truck journeys, higher pallets have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 350 tons CO2e between July and December 2011 (based on 21 kg CO2e/pallet, which was the average emission value in 2010). Less truck journeys also has a direct effect on other traffic-related environmental issues, such as air pollution, noise disturbance and traffic congestion.
The reduced number of truck journeys has made significant transport savings during the second half of 2011.
Clas Ohlson continuously identifies any damaged or broken pallets. The damaged wooden pallets are either repaired or used as fuel for the local biomass district heating system in Insjön.
