  • Energy Efficient Store Lighting Project

Energy Efficient Store Lighting Project

Clas Ohlson has installed new efficient lighting systems in two of its Norwegian stores, which have reduced store lighting energy use by over 50 percent.

Project summary

Clas Ohlson in Norway conducted a lighting efficiency project in two of its stores between 2010 and 2011 together with Enova, a Norwegian Government organisation that provides energy consultancy services. The project involved installing efficient lighting systems, which used around half the energy for lighting than conventional store lighting systems in the first quarter of 2011.

Over 50 percent store lighting energy savings

Strømmen store

The Strømmen store is located in the Strømmen Shopping Center in Skedsmo and covers an area of 1 360 m2. The new lighting system reduced the store’s annual energy use for lighting by 52 percent, from 44 kW installed power prior to the project to 21 kW. The new lighting system is estimated to annually save around 101 000 kWh and € 15 000 (120 000 NOK)*.

Oslo Torggata store

The Torggata store in Oslo has 1 570 m2 of retail space and was redeveloped according to Clas Ohlson’s new store concept. The store reduced its annual energy use for lighting by 56 percent from 61 kW installed power prior to the project to 27 kW. The new lighting system is estimated to annually save around 124 800 kWh and € 24 000 (188 000 NOK)*.

* note that the annual energy savings are estimates for 2011 based on the first three months of the year.

Improving store energy efficiency

More energy efficient lighting

The new lighting system uses fewer luminaries for general lighting and makes greater use of spotlights, which reduces the overall installed power. For example, light fittings with four 36 W T8 fluorescent tube lights were replaced by two 49 W T5 lamps, which reduced the power usage per light fitting from 144 W to 98 W. 70 W spotlights were replaced with 35 W halogen lamps. All new fluorescent lights and spotlights also use modern reflector techniques, which allow further reductions to the power and number of light fittings required.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps were considered for the project, but it was concluded that current LED lamps were too expensive and did not fulfil all the necessary demands for use in Clas Ohlson’s stores. Clas Ohlson intends to monitor the development of LED technology in the next few years for future lighting upgrades.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

The more efficient lighting systems contribute toward reduced greenhouse gas emissions by using less electricity. The annual carbon savings due to the systems in the Strømmen and Oslo Torggata stores are approximately 2 030 and 2 490 kg CO2/kWh respectively (based on the average Nordic electricity generation value of 0.02 kg CO2/kWh).

High quality lighting

The lighting systems provide more modern and high quality lighting. The system also provides better effect lighting with more varied lighting intensities.

More flexible lighting solution

The lighting systems use fittings and spotlights that are easy to adjust when the store layout is altered in the future. Stores can therefore avoid the need for electrical remodelling, which involves significant time and financial costs. The system also allows a greater variety of possibilities to display products in the store, as the lighting can be easily adjusted to illuminate various heights or areas.

Improving lighting efficiency in other Clas Ohlson stores

There is great potential to install similar energy efficient lighting systems in other stores. Clas Ohlson will continue to monitor the progress of the project and investigate the potential to use the new lighting solution in both the establishment of new stores and the redevelopment of existing stores.
