Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson connected its Head Office, Distribution Centre and flagship store in Insjön to the local biomass district heating system between 2008 and 2010, which has significantly reduced the company’s environmental impacts and heating costs.
A biomass district heating system is a centralised heating system that uses biomass as a fuel to heat several buildings in a district. Biomass is biological material, such as wood, and is a renewable source of energy when used as fuel.
Clas Ohlson’s head office and distribution centre was connected to the local district heating system in 2008, and Clas Ohlson’s Insjön store was connected in 2010. Clas Ohlson’s operations in Insjön consumed 2.43 GWh of district heating in 2009, and the supply is expected to increase in 2010 due to the connection of the Insjön store to the system, and the expansion of the distribution centre during the year. The system provides Clas Ohlson’s buildings with heating and hot water all year round.
Clas Ohlson switched from oil and electric boilers to biomass district heating, which has significantly reduced environmental impacts and heating costs.
The district heating system in insjön is owned by Dalaenergi and is primarily fuelled by wood chips. Oil is also used as a supplementary fuel in periods of high heating demand, and currently accounts for around 7 percent of the total fuel used in a typical year. However, the proportion of oil is to be minimised in the future following Dalaenergi’s modernisation of the district heating system in 2010, which will further reduce environmental impacts and financial costs.
The distribution centre and the Insjön Clas Ohlson store were previously heated by on-site electric and oil boilers, which were expensive and inefficient. Oil boilers combust heating oil and emit carbon dioxide and other environmentally damaging gasses. The biomass district heating system provides primarily renewable heating and has reduced the associated environmental impacts. The oil and electrical boilers remain in the distribution centre and the Insjön store as backup heating systems in the event of a fault with the district heating system.
The use of wood chips as a fuel is near carbon neutral, as the combustion process merely releases the carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree during its lifetime. Carbon dioxide is emitted during the harvesting and transportation of the wood, although sourcing wood locally can minimize these emissions.
In 2009, heating costs for the head office and the distribution centre were about a third less, compared with the old electric and oil heating systems, and amounted to savings of around €88,000. Financial savings are expected to be greater in 2010 as the Insjön store was connected to the district heating system in February 2010.
Clas Ohlson’s connection to the Insjön biomass district heating system has instantly reduced the company’s overall environmental impact and led to financial savings.
