The story of Clas Ohlson
Clas Ohlson was only 22, when he started his mail-order business, which today is listed on the stock exchange and has thousands of staff working in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the UK and China.Clas lived and operated his business in Insjön, Dalarna County, Sweden. This is also where our charming Clas Ohlson Museum is located, in a little red cottage just a stone’s throw away from our original, and now largest Clas Ohlson store (3,000 square meters).
Many customers stop by to relax for awhile, right before or right after visiting our store. The exhibitions offer a fascinating and nostalgic trip through our company’s history, through handbooks, catalogues from the 1920s onwards, antique band saws, gramophones, photo equipment, kayaks, radio receivers and hundreds of other products. We even have a little quaint movie theatre in the museum, where you can see a film about Clas Ohlson at your leisure.
Lars Henricsson, who was responsible for the construction of museum, got to know Clas Ohlson well, partly through experience and partly through his work with the museum. "A large part of our company’s success depended on Clas’ keen business sense at the time. Together with his strong feeling for his town, he established the groundwork for a stable and growing company." Today, Elisabeth Runesdotter and Marianne Brännström take care of all our visitors. They carry out guided tours and are also responsible for the museum’s further development. "We want to create a living history, where a feeling for the area and the Clas Ohlson spirit has a chance to come to the forefront. We also want to display how our company has grown tremendously through decenniums of world wars, technical developments and an ever increasing standard of prosperity."
Would you like to help us in expanding our museum? Do you have any items, handbooks or drawings that you have bought from Clas Ohlson long ago or perhaps some amusing anecdotes about the company? If so, get in touch with us!
