Sustainability case studies
The majority of goods are transported to Gothenburg by sea and on to Insjön by rail.
Sea freight accounted for 96% of goods transportation in 2010, and was responsible for 64% of CO2 emissions.
Clas Ohlson and its sea haulage companies are working to minimise emissions by optimising space utilisation.
The sea freight emissions decreased by around 4% in 2010 to 3.65 g CO2/tkm, compared with the previous year.
Clas Ohlson aims to reduce emissions to less than 3.52 CO2/tkm by 2012.
Road freight only accounted for 3.4% of goods transport to the DC in 2010. However, it was responsible for 30% of CO2 emissions.
Clas Ohlson is working with its road haulage partners to make more efficient use of space.
The road freight emissions decreased by almost 3% in 2010 to 48.6 g CO2/tkm, compared with the previous year.
Clas Ohlson aims to reduce emissions to less than 46.7 g CO2/tkm by 2012.
Rail accounts for 85% of the goods transport from Gothenburg to Insjön, which is the maximum proportion possible at present.
Rail freight is also a significant part of goods transport to England, as goods are transported by rail from Borlänge to Gothenburg (460 km) before continuing their journey by ship.
17.8% of all land transport was by train in 2010, which is over 15% more than in 2009.
Clas Ohlson aims for over 17.7% of its land transport to occur by rail in 2012. This target was exceeded in 2010.
Airfreight has the greatest climate impact of all means of transport. Clas Ohlson is working to minimise the proportion of airfreight in relation to its total goods flow.
Initiatives include cost effectively sourcing more goods, such as multimedia products, from Europe rather than Asia to reduce the need for airfreight.
Clas Ohlson’s presence in Shanghai and the local testing of goods prior to shipment has reduced the need for airfreight.
The proportion of airfreight decreased by 25% in 2010 compared with 2009.
Clas Ohlson’s objective of airfreight amounting to less than 0.085% of its total goods flow has been exceeded in 2009 and 2010.
Goods are primarily transported from the DC to stores and customers by road. However, the proportion of rail and sea freight to stores is increasing.
Clas Ohlson is also working with logistics companies to reduce road freight by improving space efficiency in delivery trucks.
Rail and sea freight from the DC increased from 1.9 to 16.4% between 2009 and 2010.
Clas Ohlson aims to continue to increase the proportion of rail and sea freight from the DC in the future.
Clas Ohlson is a growing company, and there are increasing demands for business travel. Total business travel increased by 9% in 2010.
Clas Ohlson is managing the need for increased business travel by prioritising and promoting videoconferencing or rail travel where possible.
The amount of km travelled by train increased by almost 50% and total business travel emissions decreased by 7% to 99.8 g/km of CO2 in 2010 compared with the previous year.
Clas Ohlson aims for business travel emissions of less than 99.4 g/km by 2012.
